The Russian Ministry of Justice has officially added acclaimed “Leviathan” director Andrey Zvyagintsev to its registry of foreign agents, according to reports by RBC.

The Ministry stated that Zvyagintsev was involved in “creating content and materials for an unrestricted audience on behalf of foreign agents and organizations designated as undesirable within the Russian Federation.”

Furthermore, authorities alleged that the filmmaker “disseminated false information regarding the decisions made by Russian public authorities and their official policies,” noting that he currently resides abroad and maintains ties with other individuals labeled as foreign agents.

In other news, Zvyagintsev’s latest feature, “Minotaur,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was honored with the Grand Prix. The film has been selected by France as its official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.
