Amazon’s God of War TV series secures two major lead actors

While principal photography has yet to commence on Amazon MGM Studios’ highly anticipated live-action reimagining of God of War, pre-production is moving at a breakneck pace. Helmed by veteran showrunner Ronald D. Moore (known for Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind), the project has seen a flurry of casting updates in recent weeks. We now have a clearer picture of the ensemble that will bring the Norse realms to life, including the central father-son duo and the formidable Aesir gods.

Ryan Hurst, widely acclaimed for his poignant portrayal of Opie in Sons of Anarchy, has been tapped for the iconic role of Kratos. Reflecting on his transition from gamer to protagonist, Hurst shared his excitement on social media, stating, “I used to play as him; now I get to be him.” He expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to wield the Leviathan Axe and honored the fans who turned the Ghost of Sparta’s journey into a modern legend.

The newest talent to join the fray is Callum Vinson (Poker Face), who will portray Kratos’ son, Atreus. The series aims to capture the emotional core of the 2018 game, following the pair as they navigate a dangerous odyssey to scatter the ashes of Faye, their late wife and mother. Prime Video describes the narrative as a dual journey of growth: Kratos attempts to instill the discipline of godhood in his son, while Atreus helps his father rediscover the flickering embers of his own humanity.

God of War is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
