After 9 Years, Bungie Is Finally Saying Goodbye to Destiny 2
Attention, Guardians: the long-standing saga of Light and Darkness is reaching its conclusion. Bungie has officially confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service update on June 9, marking the end of the game’s active development cycle.
In a detailed blog post titled “Every End is a New Beginning,” the studio explained that while Destiny 2 will remain fully playable—much like the original Destiny—the team is pivoting their resources toward future projects. The announcement notes, “While our passion for Destiny 2 remains, it has become clear that following The Final Shape, we have reached the point where our collective worlds, and the Destiny franchise as a whole, must evolve beyond Destiny 2.”
Originally, Bungie had slated an update titled Shadow and Order for March, intended to follow the Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion. This was meant to lead into further content drops like Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist. However, after a delay announced in February, those plans shifted. The June 9 release date is now reserved for the game’s swan song: Monument of Triumph.
This final update serves as an expansive reimagining of the traditional “Moments of Triumph” celebration, acting as a retrospective for nine years of history. Monument of Triumph aims for a grand finale, featuring significant tuning for weapons and gear, the introduction of fresh abilities, and the highly anticipated return of the Sparrow Racing League. Additionally, the rewards progression originally designed for Shadow and Order has been overhauled and incorporated here, offering players a new exotic hand cannon and other seasonal rewards. While a major narrative expansion is not on the table, Bungie promises subtle character moments to provide closure and bridge the themes that have defined the franchise.
A major quality-of-life shift includes the restoration of the classic Director interface, which had been supplanted by the Portal during the Edge of Fate update in July 2025. While the Portal will remain, the studio acknowledged player feedback and has returned the Director to its role as the central hub for navigation. Furthermore, gear sets from across all legacy raids and planetary destinations have been refreshed to meet modern standards, including set bonuses and Tier 5 stat upgrades for exotic armor released since Edge of Fate. Players will also encounter new “Distortions” during patrols, introducing a fresh layer of challenge to the open world.
Ultimately, Monument of Triumph appears to be a respectful closing chapter, ensuring that the game remains a rewarding experience for anyone who wishes to keep playing. As the post states, the goal is to provide a versatile environment where players feel their time is valued, regardless of how they choose to spend their session.
As a veteran with over a thousand hours invested, this news is bittersweet. There is a prevailing sentiment among the community that the game’s true narrative arc concluded with 2024’s The Final Shape. While it is unfortunate that it took two years for the studio to align with that reality, the larger question remains: what is the actual future of the Destiny franchise?
Bungie’s statement that they are shifting focus toward “incubating our next games” leaves little room for a surprise Destiny 3 reveal. With Marathon currently facing hurdles in retaining its player base and Sony reporting significant financial losses earlier this month, it seems clear that both Bungie and its parent company are prioritizing a clean slate.
