2022’s Wildest Action Movie Set for Anime Adaptation

While visionary Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli is currently immersed in the production of his upcoming epic, Varanasi, his previous global sensation may be preparing for a dramatic second act. Following its 2022 debut and subsequent Academy Award victory for Best Original Song, RRR is now being considered for a transition into the world of Japanese animation.

“We have initiated conversations with various animation houses in Japan to bring RRR to life as an anime,” Rajamouli revealed to Polygon. “I am waiting for these negotiations to finalize. If all goes well, we hope to announce a compelling continuation of the story in anime form.”

This venture is born from a genuine passion rather than mere branding. Rajamouli has recently become a devoted enthusiast of the medium, citing popular franchises such as Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan as major influences. He has also expressed admiration for the acclaimed Netflix series Arcane.

“My exposure to anime is relatively recent,” he admitted, “but the content I’ve experienced has been absolutely breathtaking. I find myself questioning how I managed to overlook these masterpieces for so long.”

Although the director’s focus is currently tethered to the set of Varanasi, he notes that his journey into anime is already refining his directorial sensibilities and narrative approach.

“It has unlocked new perspectives on how stories can be delivered with greater intensity and emotional resonance,” Rajamouli explained. “The ability to shock the audience with subverted expectations while maintaining a deep emotional core is something I find fascinating. These aren’t just mere surprises; they are powerful, character-driven moments that truly catch you off guard.”

While the RRR anime project remains in the early stages, Rajamouli is simultaneously expanding another of his cinematic universes. His legendary Baahubali franchise is receiving a two-part animated spinoff, with the initial chapter expected in 2027. Fans of his live-action work can look forward to Varanasi hitting global theaters on April 7, 2027.
