Zach Cregger Will Not Direct Franchises After “Resident Evil”

Director Zach Cregger, currently helming the latest adaptation of Resident Evil, has made it clear that he has no intention of making franchise filmmaking a cornerstone of his career. According to the director, tackling this iconic Capcom series will be a one-off detour, after which he plans to return to developing original stories.

Cregger explained that he identifies primarily as a screenwriter and prefers to maintain creative autonomy over his projects. He noted that working with established intellectual property inevitably comes with mandates and structural requirements that leave little room for departure. He prefers to craft narratives based on his own creative impulses rather than conforming to the rigid expectations of an existing franchise.

This is precisely why Resident Evil serves as a rare exception. Cregger admits to a long-standing passion for the source material and was granted the creative freedom to interpret the universe on his own terms. He emphasizes that he is approaching the film not as a work-for-hire assignment, but as a passion project he would personally want to watch as a fan. He noted that his primary goal is to craft a film that satisfies his own creative standards before concerning himself with audience reception.

Resident Evil is slated for international release on September 18.
