“We’re Getting Old”: Coen Brothers Promise to Release a New Film Together
In a new interview, Oscar-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, Fargo) confirmed that they are planning another project together.
We’re getting old. I hope it happens in the near future. We have a few different things in mind, which we call the library: material we’ve written before, plus ideas we meant to turn into screenplays but never got around to. So we don’t know yet,
the Coens told the French outlet AFP.
They also made clear that the new film won’t be a fantasy:
It’s certainly a strange cultural trend that mainstream cinema is now mostly fantasy: fantasy, science fiction, horror, comic books, every sort of fantasy. For us that’s sad, because we’ve never been drawn to that kind of thing.
In 2024, Ethan Coen said that the duo was working on a “bloody horror movie.” The brothers’ last joint project, the western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, came out in 2019.
Since then, Joel has directed The Tragedy of Macbeth with Denzel Washington, and his gothic thriller Jack of Spades is expected in 2027. Ethan has released the comedies Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t!, both starring Margaret Qualley.
