Waterways of Illinois

In our latest development update, we are thrilled to showcase the diverse aquatic landscapes coming to the Illinois DLC for American Truck Simulator. From the bustling industrial shoreline of Chicago to the serene, moss-draped wetlands of the south, the “Prairie State” features a surprising variety of waterways that our environment team has meticulously recreated. Let’s dive into the details.

Chicago Lakefront

The Majesty of Lake Michigan

Few sights are as synonymous with the region as Lake Michigan. As one of the five North American Great Lakes, it ranks as the second-largest by volume and the second-deepest, presenting an oceanic horizon that seems to stretch into infinity. As you navigate the urban corridors of Chicago, you will find yourself driving alongside the scenic Lakefront Trail. The route offers striking views of Oak Street Beach, a popular sandy retreat where the blue waters of the lake collide with the dramatic silhouette of the city’s skyscrapers.

Inland Reservoirs and Engineering Marvels

Beyond the Great Lakes, Illinois is home to an intricate network of reservoirs that serve as both recreational hubs and vital infrastructure. In the southern reaches of the state, truckers will encounter Rend Lake, a massive reservoir nestled within lush forests. We have faithfully modeled the Rend Lake Dam, a significant structure completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1970s.

The journey continues past other notable bodies of water, including the pristine Little Grassy Lake and Crab Orchard Lake—the centerpiece of a sprawling National Wildlife Refuge. While hauling cargo along I-70, you’ll also cross the Highland Silver Lake, a primary water source that sustains the surrounding communities.

Rivers, Historic Rails, and Southern Swamps

The geography of Illinois shifts dramatically as you head further south. Here, the Cache River dominates the landscape with its unique wetland ecosystem and dense, primeval vegetation. This region offers a stark atmospheric contrast to the flat northern prairies. While crossing the river on IL-3, eagle-eyed drivers might spot an aging wooden trestle bridge—a silent remnant of the historic Illinois Central Railroad, which has connected the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico since the mid-19th century.

For those who appreciate the finer environmental details, look out for Sandusky Creek and the swampy vistas near the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge. These areas are inspired by the Great River National Wildlife Refuge Complex, featuring realistic marshlands and hidden gems like Hatfield/McCoy Pond.
