Warhammer 40K is Getting a Space Marines Animated Series from the Perfect Studio
The relentless expansion of the Warhammer 40,000 universe presses onward, fueled by a collaborative animated project between Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop. Henry Cavill is attached as an executive producer, continuing his crusade to bring the grimdark franchise to screens alongside his efforts spearheading Amazon’s live-action television adaptation penned by Mike Flanagan.
According to reports from Variety, this upcoming animated venture serves as a direct spin-off from the anthology series Secret Level, drawing specifically from its hard-hitting Space Marine installment, “And They Shall Know No Fear.” Blur Studios returns to handle the animation, with Dave Wilson—who directed the original short—stepping in as co-creator and director. Wilson is spearheading the development alongside accomplished screenwriter John Orloff (Masters of the Air, Band of Brothers).
While specific narrative details remain tightly under wraps, the series centers on the Deathwatch, an elite fraternity of Space Marines dedicated to eradicating alien abominations. It stands to reason that the project will track the exploits of the exact same squad featured in the anthology piece, led by the indomitable Lieutenant Titus.
Production is heavily backed by an all-star executive producing team, including Secret Level mastermind Tim Miller, Dave Wilson, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, Games Workshop’s Andy Smillie, Natalie Viscuso, and Cavill. The series is being forged through a close partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop, the ultimate custodians of the intellectual property.
“And They Shall Know No Fear” emerged as a fan-favorite standout among the mixed reception of Secret Level, chronicling Lieutenant Titus and his brothers-in-arms as they purge Chaos cultists. Unforgiving, remarkably spare with its dialogue, and boasting pristine animation, the episode stands as the quintessential embodiment of everything that defines Warhammer 40,000—for better or worse.
Blur Studios has long enjoyed a sterling reputation across gaming communities for crafting breathtaking 3D cinematics and promotional trailers. The animation powerhouse previously breathed life into the stunning cutscenes of Halo Wars and delivered iconic promotional reels for Star Wars: The Old Republic, including the Wilson-directed masterpiece “Deceived.”
“Secret Level was never meant to be viewed merely as an isolated anthology; it was conceptualized as a springboard for grander narratives,” Wilson shared with Variety. “The reception to our Warhammer contribution was staggering, particularly from passionate fans who recognized the meticulous care invested in honoring the source material. This series affords us the canvas to expand upon that foundation and tell an expansive, long-form story. I’ve harbored the ambition to craft an extended narrative within the Warhammer 40,000 universe for over two decades, and I am profoundly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for making it a reality.”
True to form, Games Workshop remains tireless in its mission to spread the gospel of the Imperium. Alongside a continuous rollout of tabletop miniatures, an impressive slate of Warhammer 40,000 video games is currently in development—including Dawn of War 4, Space Marine 3, a fresh installment in the Total War series, Boltgun 2, and numerous others, not to mention a recent crossover event in Helldivers 2. Nearly forty years since its inception, this brutal sci-fi phenomenon continues to strike a deep chord with audiences worldwide.
