Viking Strategy Game Northgard to Receive Final Update Eight Years After Release

Almost eight years after its original launch, Shiro Games’ strategy title Northgard is set to receive its final major edition. On December 4, 2025, Northgard: Definitive Edition will arrive and replace the standard edition in digital stores. This release consolidates the base game, several DLCs, and a number of new additions.

The Definitive Edition will include the Cross of Vidar expansion, three previously sold add-on clans — Sváfnir (Snake), Nidhogg (Dragon), and Svadilfari (Horse) — which are no longer available separately, as well as a digital artbook.

Owners of the original edition stand to benefit the most: their copies will be upgraded to the Definitive Edition at no extra cost. The developers recommend that new players wait until December 4, when the final edition launches alongside a sale with discounts.

In addition, the game will gain a new Valhalla biome, Bifrost locations usable in both single-player and multiplayer modes, and a Frostbite module that increases rewards for each activated trial. The in-game store will also be revamped.

Northgard is a survival-oriented strategy set in Norse mythology, with gameplay reminiscent of The Settlers series.

The game launched on PC on March 7, 2018, and subsequently released on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, before arriving on iOS and Android.
