Ubisoft’s 2010 Cult-Hit WWII PC Strategy Game Is Officially Back From the Dead

More than a decade after its removal from digital storefronts, Ubisoft’s celebrated military strategy title, R.U.S.E., has made a triumphant return to Steam. Whether you are a long-time veteran or a newcomer to the battlefield, the game is now accessible once again. This refreshed release arrives with all original downloadable content included and features full support for Valve’s Steam Deck.

Developer Eugen Systems shared their excitement regarding the game’s comeback on Tuesday via a Steam update. They noted they are eager to introduce a fresh generation of players to this classic, which remains highly regarded in the real-time strategy genre for its emphasis on tactical deception and sharp strategic maneuvering.

Eugen Systems also shed light on why the title remained dormant for 11 years.

“Although we created R.U.S.E. in 2010, we did not officially own the property,” the developers explained. “Due to distribution hurdles, we were unable to assist players or provide access for years. Fortunately, the opportunity arose to regain control, allowing us to bring this pillar of the RTS genre back to our catalog, complete with a few bonus improvements.”

R.U.S.E. immerses players in the intensity of World War II, offering command over the armies of the United States, France, Germany, Japan, the USSR, Italy, and the U.K. Each nation possesses distinct units and unique playstyles. The core of the experience revolves around psychological warfare; using specialized “RUSE” cards, commanders can manipulate enemy perception, bolster defenses, or gather vital intelligence to outsmart their rivals.

Originally launched in 2010 across PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, the game later expanded to Mac. Its release era is clearly evidenced by its inclusion of multi-touch support and compatibility with PlayStation Move controllers. Following its delisting in 2015, Ubisoft eventually took the official servers offline in 2024.

Following the success of R.U.S.E., developer Eugen Systems went on to build a respected portfolio of strategy titles, notably Act of Aggression and the Steel Division franchise.
