Two Decades Later, One of the Greatest Platformers Ever Makes Its Official Return
Back in 2006, Swedish developer Nifflas introduced the world to Knytt, a whimsical freeware platformer for Windows PC that ultimately blossomed into a beloved trilogy alongside its successors, Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground. Now, to commemorate its 20th anniversary, the indie masterpiece that started it all has been thoughtfully resurrected as Knytt Classic.
Launched earlier this week, Knytt Classic was brought to life by Bit Kid—the studio behind Chasm and Wolfhound. This anniversary edition features a meticulous, pixel-perfect rebuild designed to perform seamlessly on contemporary systems. True to the spirit of the original release, Knytt Classic remains completely free. “Knytt was a monumental influence on my trajectory as a game creator, so utilizing the tools I developed for my own projects on a modern version has been profoundly rewarding,” shared James Petruzzi, founder and lead developer at Bit Kid, via press release. “Nifflas is an incredible person, too, making this entire endeavor a deeply joyous and almost meditative undertaking. It sounds unconventional, but building this version brought me a profound sense of calm, and I genuinely hope it evokes that same serenity in players.”
In the original narrative, players step into the tiny shoes of the eponymous protagonist, a small alien creature abducted by extraterrestrials. Stranded on an unfamiliar planet following a spacecraft crash, players must guide the wanderer across varied terrain to scavenge scattered components needed to rebuild a vessel and journey home. The adventure entails fluid exploration, leaping, and scaling through diverse planetary biomes while interacting with local inhabitants. Characterized by its unhurried, deliberate rhythm, Knytt has long been celebrated as a quintessential “zen-like atmospheric platformer” capable of delivering a uniquely calming experience.
Beyond preserving the core journey, Knytt Classic introduces modern enhancements to elevate the experience, including a comprehensive achievement system and full gamepad support. Players can also toggle atmospheric visual filters, such as nostalgic CRT and handheld LCD display modes. Furthermore, Bit Kid has added two demanding challenges: “UltraTough” and “Brutally Unfair Knytt,” the latter featuring a completely remixed game world. To top it off, Hempuli—the visionary creator behind the acclaimed puzzle hit Baba Is You—collaborated on the project to design the punishing Knytt XH (Extra Hard) mode.
Knytt Classic is available now for Windows PC, macOS, and Linux.
