Twilight Creator to Direct Female-Led Western

Catherine Hardwicke, the visionary behind the original Twilight, is set to direct a new Western titled American River. Set in 1848 California on the cusp of the Gold Rush, the narrative follows four women from vastly different walks of life as they unite to defend their homesteads and fight for survival in a harsh, lawless frontier.

Penned by screenwriter Eric Essau, the film aims to reinvent the classic Western through a feminine lens while honoring the genre’s essential tropes—high-stakes shootouts, horseback chases, the lure of gold, and sweeping, rugged landscapes.

Production is slated to commence in Australia during the second quarter of 2027. Casting details have yet to be announced.
