Tim Burton’s Underrated Fantasy Masterpiece Is Finally Available to Stream
When cinephiles debate the most iconic works in Tim Burton’s filmography, titles like Beetlejuice, his moody Batman epics, and the melancholic Edward Scissorhands almost always dominate the conversation. Even The Nightmare Before Christmas frequently appears in the lineup, despite being directed by Henry Selick. Yet, there is one gem from 2003 that often goes overlooked—which, notably, is available to stream on Pluto TV starting July 1—and it arguably represents some of the finest, most heartfelt filmmaking of his career.
<p><em>Big Fish</em> centers on Will Bloom (Billy Crudup), a man struggling to bridge the emotional divide between himself and his estranged, dying father, Edward Bloom (Albert Finney). The narrative unfolds through a series of vivid, surreal flashbacks detailing the younger Edward’s (Ewan McGregor) exploits. From encounters with a towering giant to run-ins with singing twins and catching legendary, oversized catfish, Edward’s life reads like a myth. For Will, however, these tall tales are a barrier to intimacy, and he grows desperate to separate the fiction from the man behind the stories before time runs out.</p>

<p>If I had to summarize <em>Big Fish</em> in a single word, it would be “enchanting.” This quality is largely due to the magnetic performances of its two leads. While McGregor and Finney share few physical traits, they are miraculously convincing as the same character, each lending their distinct, individual charisma to different chapters of Edward’s life.</p>
<p>McGregor portrays the young Edward as a buoyant, articulate optimist—the kind of magnetic spirit who draws people in effortlessly. It was truly McGregor at his peak, landing in a perfect window between his <em>Star Wars</em> tenure and the high-energy charisma of <em>Moulin Rouge!</em> Conversely, Finney inhabits the elder Bloom with the warmth of a favorite uncle, grounding the character in a world-weary, yet mischievous, stage of existence.</p>
<p>The film’s pacing is masterful, balanced by the whimsical nature of these tall tales and a nostalgic, toe-tapping soundtrack featuring Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Canned Heat. It feels less like a traditional Burton dark fantasy and more like a vibrant, heartfelt exploration of legacy.</p>

<p>It’s easy to understand why <em>Big Fish</em> gets lost in the shuffle of Burton’s career. It lacks his quintessential German Expressionist shadow and gloom, opting instead for a saturated, radiant palette. His protagonist, too, defies his typical mold; Edward Bloom is a celebrated, popular figure, whereas Burton usually favors the social outsider. Released between the underwhelming <em>Planet of the Apes</em> and <em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory</em>, it arrived at a turbulent juncture in the director’s timeline, which may explain its quiet reputation.</p>
<p>Regardless of why it remains an underappreciated entry, <em>Big Fish</em> is a joyous, life-affirming cinematic experience. Its final act offers a poignant, perspective-shifting conclusion that recontextualizes the entire story, leaving you to ponder your own family’s myths. For me, at least, it was a deeply moving reminder that sometimes, the stories we tell are the most honest part of who we are.</p>Source: Polygon
