The Witcher Showrunner Comments on Henry Cavill’s Departure Three Years Later

Henry Cavill departed the series “The Witcher” in 2022, and ever since the motives for his exit have been the subject of speculation and debate within the fandom.

Three years on, Netflix’s The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich has addressed the recasting for the first time. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly she explained that conversations about a possible replacement started long before Cavill left, and that the actor had expressed a desire to focus on other roles.

Among the rumored reasons for his exit were plans to reprise Superman (which ultimately did not come to fruition) and possible involvement in an Amazon-developed Warhammer 40,000 series.

Previously, Cavill had implicitly signaled dissatisfaction with the show’s creative direction. A few days before the official announcement of his departure he spoke about the importance of “believing in what you do” and said that “you should stop if you feel you’re doing something wrong.” Rumors of disagreements between the actor and the production circulated, but Hissrich declined to expand on them: “The phrase ‘creative differences’ can mean anything,” she said.

The showrunner also stressed that the series does not rely on a single performer.

Liam Hemsworth will take on the role of Geralt in the fourth season. The new episodes are scheduled to premiere on October 30, 2025. Netflix previously confirmed the series will conclude with a fifth season.
