The Sims 4 fans reminded of a save‑corrupting bug for a second year — Maxis details investigation into the bug’s causes

The game’s technical state continues to frustrate fans.

For years, players of The Sims 4 have reported instances of save file corruption. The issue has frequently been associated with the “For Rent” expansion pack — many users who installed that DLC experienced broken save files.

Recently, Maxis said they had identified a “partial fix” and ran tests on it.

They have now released an update on their investigation: the team discovered a potential source of the problem, but a definitive fix has not yet been implemented.

“One of our leads points to the ‘Scratch File’. These are critical temporary files used by the game, and reports indicate they can sometimes vanish or be deleted, which may lead to save corruption.

We are currently tracing the root cause of these deletions, paying close attention to any areas where The Sims 4 files might interact with other systems, cloud backup services, or other external factors that could remove or overwrite them.”

The developers also noted that save corruption incidents occurred prior to the release of For Rent, so they will be examining other DLC as well. The investigation is ongoing.
