The Simpsons: Hit & Run Writer Does Not Rule Out a Re-Release
Matt Selman, a creative powerhouse behind The Simpsons with credits on nearly 600 episodes, the feature film, and numerous interactive titles, recently weighed in on the prospect of resurrecting the beloved classic, The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Interest in a potential remake has reached a fever pitch following news regarding the re-emergence of the studio that first brought the game to life.
“Hit & Run is such a fascinating case study. I helped pen the script in my mid-twenties, and at the time, I had no inkling it would eventually achieve such massive cult status. Among the vast library of Simpsons games, that one stands alone.”
“It was a lifetime ago, but I vividly recall our early creative sessions. GTA III had just revolutionized the industry, and we were adamant that our game become the Simpsons’ answer to that experience. We fought a grueling battle just to allow players to exit their vehicles; the developers were initially quite resistant to the idea. Fortunately, we prevailed, because exploring the world on foot is where the magic happens.”
“While there are no concrete plans yet, my official stance is ‘never say never.’ We are well aware of the fans’ enduring passion and their desire for a comeback, which is always a great starting point.”
This isn’t the first time the producer has explored the logistics of a remaster. Five years prior, Selman touched upon the legal complexities and the profound impact that Grand Theft Auto 3 had on their design philosophy.
“I’d love to see a polished remaster, but navigating the ‘corporate octopus’ of rights and ownership is incredibly daunting.”
“Back then, we were obsessed with Grand Theft Auto, whereas the publisher was pushing for a standard racing title. We argued that the audience wanted more than just driving; they wanted to step out of the car and interact with Springfield. There was a significant internal struggle over whether to keep it a mission-based driving game or evolve it into a hybrid open-world title.”
Interestingly, despite the legacy of Hit & Run, Selman holds a personal preference for 2007’s The Simpsons Game, which debuted alongside the theatrical movie.
“To me, that project remains the most clever and innovative love letter to gaming culture we’ve ever produced. The narrative depth we achieved in that script was truly on par with our work for the big screen.”
