The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake’s File Size Officially Confirmed

When The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1998, the whole game fit on a 32 MB cartridge. The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 remake won’t. The modernized version is more than 800 times larger, according to its newly revealed file size. You may want to free up some storage before launch.

The Ocarina of Time remake will occupy 27 GB on Switch 2. The figure comes from a photo of the game’s Japanese download card, which Genki_JPN shared on X. By current standards, that is hardly enormous. Call of Duty alone can consume more than 200 GB on consoles. Even so, it makes the remake the largest mainline Zelda release to date.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the latest mainline entry, requires 24 GB on Switch 2. Only one Switch 2 game currently surpasses the remake in size, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. That 2025 Musou spinoff occupies a little over 43 GB. The remake adds an elaborate, if divisive, art style and a broader game world, so a heavier download makes sense. Still, I find it a little startling that it outweighs Tears of the Kingdom.

The wait is nearly over for fans eager to play the Ocarina of Time remake. It launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on Nov. 5, and Nintendo is one of the few publishers bold enough to release a game anywhere near Grand Theft Auto 6. Besides the refreshed visuals, the remake adds several new features, including the ability to jump whenever you like. Wow!

Polygon played the game earlier this month and was impressed by how well the iconic adventure holds up in its new form. Our hands-on impressions concluded that Nintendo has succeeded. The remake looks stunning, plays better than ever, and stirs up nostalgia for Link’s first 3D outing while still feeling thoroughly modern.
