The Future Arrived Sooner Than Expected — Capcom on Pragmata
Capcom has been working on Pragmata for many years; its narrative centers on an artificial intelligence that rises up on the Moon.
Although the game is slated for release in 2026, the developers admit that a premise intended to feel futuristic has suddenly become highly topical.
At the Tokyo Game Show 2025, game director Cho Yong-hee and producer Naoto Oyama revealed that the idea of AI serving as the primary antagonist emerged later in development. No one at Capcom expected artificial intelligence’s role in the real world to accelerate so rapidly or to become so consequential by the time the title launches, especially after the delays.
Producer Oyama noted that Capcom could not have predicted AI’s rise to prominence. The team concedes that a story set in the near future has, in some ways, been overtaken by reality. Yong-hee added that the future arrived sooner than the studio had anticipated.
Capcom insists, however, that the swift growth of AI in the real world has not altered Pragmata’s artistic vision or its narrative arc. The project remained on its originally mapped-out course and did not undergo substantive changes.
We’ll have to wait until 2026 to judge how successfully Pragmata realizes its depiction of artificial intelligence.
