The First Trailer for the New Minecraft Movie Is Not What You Expected
We are thrilled to unveil Polygon’s latest sports documentary. The subject? Minecraft—through the unique lens of the New York City public school system. Battle of the Boroughs: The Kids Who Build New York City in Minecraft premieres this Thursday, May 7, and it is a project that truly embodies our spirit.
Directed by our own Simone de Rochefort (who previously co-directed 2024’s The Great Game: The Making of Spycraft), this 40-minute feature chronicles the 2025 Battle of the Boroughs. This NYC Public Schools initiative challenged students to utilize Minecraft Education to design more sustainable, inclusive, and future-forward visions of their city. Throughout months of competition—spanning initial classroom brainstorming sessions to the high-stakes Mayor’s Cup finals—these students not only placed digital bricks but also navigated complex societal issues. As the film illustrates, these young minds tackled heavy topics like housing inequality, climate resilience, public infrastructure, and the intricacies of civic decision-making—all within the same sandbox game that brought us the Chicken Jockey.

Having observed the production of this project over the past year, what struck me most is how Minecraft evolves from a simple creative tool into a compelling lens through which to view student ingenuity and the pressing challenges facing modern educators. Simone and her crew managed to capture the essence of their subjects with raw authenticity, perfectly embodying the mantra: “show, don’t tell.”
The timing for our documentary is perfect: Battle of the Boroughs will hold its screening at the second annual NYC Video Game Festival on May 9, coinciding with the crowning of this year’s champions. If you cannot attend in person, you can catch the action via a live digital stream on Twitch, which will showcase everything from high-level League of Legends and Valorant matches to the climactic Minecraft finale.
Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to release Battle of the Boroughs: The Kids Who Build New York City in Minecraft.
