The Duffer Brothers Reveal What’s Next for Stranger Things After Season 5

The cinematic conclusion of Stranger Things is set to debut on Netflix and in select theaters this New Year’s Eve. It promises a grand resolution to the supernatural mystery that first gripped audiences in 2016 with the disappearance of Will Byers in Hawkins, Indiana. However, while this finale serves as a poignant goodbye to the iconic cast and their characters, the globally acclaimed franchise is only just beginning to branch out.

In the coming year, Netflix will debut the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85. Furthermore, series creators Ross and Matt Duffer have confirmed their direct involvement in a live-action spinoff currently in the early stages of development. The brothers also collaborated with writer Kate Trefy and director Stephen Daldry on the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which transitioned from a successful London run in 2023 to its Broadway opening this April.

“Collaborating with creators who possess a unique vision for this universe is incredibly rewarding,” Ross Duffer explains. “They offer a perspective distinct from our own, and we are optimistic that future projects will maintain this same level of creative intensity.”

The concept for a theatrical prequel was first pitched to Netflix by Daldry following the show’s second season, though the Duffers didn’t begin formal development until production on season 4 was underway. They chose to center the narrative on Henry Creel, utilizing the stage to explore his complex origins and ties to the Upside Down in ways the television series couldn’t accommodate. Actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the character on screen, studied Louis McCartney’s stage performance to prepare for the final season and even made a surprise cameo during a December performance in New York.

“I had already delved into Henry’s fractured family dynamics and his profound sense of alienation for season 4,” Bower noted. “However, there are specific narrative threads within The First Shadow that were crucial for me to integrate as we transitioned into the final chapter of the show.”

The play is essential viewing for fans looking to understand Vecna’s motivations in season 5, as both projects were written in tandem. This synchronized development required the Duffers to meticulously edit the series script to ensure no spoilers were leaked prematurely.

“It was a delicate balancing act,” Matt Duffer admits. “We needed the play and the final season to function as independent stories, but once the show concludes, we may revisit the play to incorporate even more ambitious ideas.”

The first seven episodes of Stranger Things season 5 are currently streaming on Netflix; the series finale premieres on December 31.
