Taylor Swift Releases ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ Music Video After Theatrical Premiere
Video premiered in theaters Oct. 3 and was posted online Oct. 5, 2025.

Taylor Swift’s cinematic new music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” is now streaming on YouTube, following an exclusive theatrical debut on Friday, October 3.
Written and directed by Swift, the video arrived online the evening of Sunday, October 5. Overflowing with references and visual callbacks, the piece finds Swift inhabiting multiple personas: a reimagined Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the heroine of a Golden-Age Hollywood musical, the lead of a 1960s girl group, and the contemporary showgirl persona familiar to her fans.
The clip opens with Swift emerging from a staged recreation of Sir John Everett Millais’s 19th-century painting of Ophelia, then pivots through a series of stylized set pieces — nods to Marilyn Monroe, homages to Ronnie Spector and The Ronettes, an Anything Goes–inspired big number — before closing on a quieter, intimate shot of her soaking in a bathtub. The sequence suggests a character who escapes the expected tragic fate and remains very much alive.
The final image from the music video also serves as the official album cover for Swift’s newly released record, The Life of a Showgirl.
According to Luminate, opening-day sales for The Life of a Showgirl reached 2.7 million on October 3 — a figure that aggregates physical and digital purchases across all editions. That mark represents Swift’s largest single-day sales total to date and the second-biggest sales week for any album since Luminate began electronic tracking in 1991; Adele’s 25 still holds the top single-week tally. Additional details about the album’s first-week sales and streaming performance are expected in the coming days.
“The Fate of Ophelia” premiered in theaters as part of The Release Party of a Showgirl, Swift’s theatrical event that opened at No. 1 at the box office. The screening included the video debut, behind-the-scenes footage, Swift’s commentary on all 12 tracks from The Life of a Showgirl, and the first presentations of each song’s lyric video.
