Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, is tracking toward what may be her largest release yet — even as it provokes a wide range of reactions. While many listeners have embraced the record immediately, others find certain songs’ playful, straightforward lyrics less to their taste.

In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 (Oct. 7), Swift said she welcomes both praise and critique. She noted that, especially in the first week after a release, any conversation mentioning her or the album helps its visibility, and she respects that people will form their own responses to art.

Swift explained that some of the trendy, tongue-in-cheek lines on Showgirl — lines like the censored refrain in “Eldest Daughter” or the cheeky turn of phrase in “Cancelled!” — are deliberate stylistic choices. Where her previous project, The Tortured Poets Department, leaned into somber and introspective tones, this record was created with a more mischievous, theatrical persona in mind.

The songwriter described the album as a chance to play with characters and voices: a collection that favors flirtation, mischief and humor alongside careful songcraft. She said she’s proud of the melodies, the storytelling and the way the tracks move in and out of different stylistic modes.

Swift also suggested that listeners’ life experiences shape how they connect with an album. She pointed out that fans often revisit earlier records and find new meaning in them as their circumstances change, and she expects Showgirl’s wider appreciation may grow over time.

Thinking long-term, she said her work is made with legacy in mind: she knows what she created and stands by it as part of the broader showgirl theme the record explores.
