“Supergirl” Underperforms at the Box Office, Analysts Predict Financial Flop
Supergirl now risks falling behind the box office results of The Marvels.
Supergirl serves as the second entry in the new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. It earned 13 million dollars on its global opening day. Of that total, 7.8 million dollars came from domestic previews and early screenings, while international markets contributed 5.2 million dollars.
The preview numbers topped those of The Marvels at 6.6 million dollars and Black Adam at 7.6 million dollars. Despite this start, weekend projections are dropping fast. Analysts initially expected a domestic opening between 47 million and 65 million dollars. Current estimates suggest the film will earn closer to 39 million dollars.
For comparison, The Marvels opened to 47 million dollars in the United States before finishing its run with 206 million dollars globally. The production budgets differ significantly, as The Marvels cost 307 million dollars against an estimated 186 million dollars for Supergirl. Even so, the Warner Bros. film needs to earn between 430 million and 450 million dollars to break even. Given the shrinking projections and mixed reviews from critics and audiences, analysts doubt the film will reach that target.
