«Street Fighter» receives negative reviews from critics
Initial reviews for the new Street Fighter film adaptation have surfaced online as the movie begins its international theatrical run this week.
Currently, the film holds a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 45 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics largely agree that while dedicated fans will likely appreciate the plethora of Easter eggs and high-octane action sequences, the screenplay suffers from a predictable narrative, jarring tonal shifts, and a notable lack of wit.
The ensemble cast features Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, and David Dastmalchian, among others. The project was helmed by director Kitao Sakurai (known for Twisted Metal). The plot follows a martial artist who enters a global tournament, where he must contend with an array of formidable opponents.
The iconic Street Fighter gaming franchise was launched by the Japanese company Capcom in 1987. The most prominent previous cinematic adaptation arrived in 1994, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
