The global audience for Stranger Things is currently in a state of high-stakes anticipation. As New Year’s Eve approaches, the final chapter of this supernatural saga will finally debut, bringing the harrowing journey of the Hawkins survivors to a close. During a recent virtual press event, Noah Schnapp shared that the cast was just as eager to uncover the show’s conclusion as the fans themselves.

“The scripts were kept under total lock and key,” Schnapp admitted. “We didn’t actually see the ending until we sat down for the collective table read. Turning those final pages was genuinely nerve-wracking because you’re desperate to know if the story gets the ending it deserves. The emotional weight in the room built steadily; by the time we reached the final scene, everyone was in tears. If the script alone was that moving, I can only imagine the impact the filmed episode will have on viewers.”

The fifth season places Will Byers back at the center of the storm. The premiere recontextualizes his original disappearance through a flashback, revealing that his abduction was the catalyst for Vecna’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) long-term campaign against Hawkins. While Will spent much of the earlier seasons as a victim of the Upside Down, he has now transitioned into a formidable combatant, wielding powers that mirror those of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

“Millie was incredibly supportive of this shift,” Schnapp noted. “It’s been a blast for us to play off each other now that we’re essentially twin superheroes.”

In the fifth episode, “Shock Jock,” Will utilizes his emerging abilities to shield Max and Holly from Vecna’s reach. However, the stakes escalate in episode 6 when he is pulled into a psychic trance. Rather than being a helpless observer, Will finds the inner fortitude to fight back. Schnapp described the filming process—which required him to be physically restrained and covered in practical blood effects—as a rewarding challenge.

“Confronting Vecna face-to-face was a pivotal moment,” Schnapp explained. “In the past, he’s always been the one taunting me while I remained paralyzed by fear. This time, I stood my ground and spoke with authority. It felt like a perfect full-circle moment, returning to the trauma of season 1 but showing exactly how much the character has grown over this decade-long journey.”

Vecna’s psychological warfare often targets Will’s deepest insecurities, specifically his fears regarding his identity and how his inner circle would react to him coming out. Drawing strength from the encouragement he received from Robin, Will decides to strip Vecna of his power by living his truth openly. By sharing his secret with his friends and family, he enters the final battle without the weight of shame.

“I truly hope that scene resonates with people and provides a sense of empowerment for anyone navigating their own journey of self-identity,” Schnapp shared. “It’s about more than just the queer community; it’s for anyone who is afraid to be who they are. Seeing the group embrace Will with such unconditional love is a powerful message of acceptance.”

The initial seven episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 are currently available for streaming on Netflix. The series finale is scheduled to air on December 31.
