Today, the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are being held in the U.S. as the biggest television awards ceremony and the TV equivalent of the Oscars. The red carpet also provided a little room for a minor GTA 6 revelation.

Stephen Root, who is one of the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series thanks to his role as Wyck Crawford in Widow’s Bay, was answering questions from a reporter. At one point, he was asked whether he could say anything about his involvement in Grand Theft Auto VI.

The actor answered in the affirmative, stressing that the game will be released on November 19 and pointing out that after Trailer 2 was shown, “too many people who knew voice and King of the Hill”, the animated series in which Stephen has voiced several characters for many years. As a result, the fact that he played Brian Heder in GTA VI was an open secret.

Root also delivered the usual remarks about how happy he is to be part of the project and that it is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Fans of the series were somewhat stunned by such an open admission, despite having long suspected whose voice they had heard as far back as May of last year.

First, choosing such a recognizable voice suggested a slight shift in the developers’ casting policy, as they had generally tried to avoid hiring well-known actors. That said, even lesser-known performers were quickly identified by attentive fans, such as Ned Luke. Besides, for the role of a mature and seasoned mentor, it makes sense to cast an equally experienced professional.

Second, it was the confirmation itself that came as a surprise. Did Stephen Root violate his non-disclosure agreement? One might have assumed that some sort of embargo had been lifted following the premiere of the gameplay showcase. But apparently not, as his fellow cast members continue to remain silent.

Perhaps this flash interview was authorized by Rockstar Games itself, which no longer has any reason to keep the obvious under wraps. And mentioning Grand Theft Auto 6, especially its release date, at one of the biggest entertainment events of the year is just some extra publicity.
