Fans seeking scary movies have many options based on Stephen King books. From classics like Carrie to modern adaptations like It, the catalog is large. However, one of the most recent adaptations stands out and returns to streaming.

The Long Walk ranks among the most powerful novels by Stephen King. Director Francis Lawrence brought the story to the big screen, achieving success in theaters and on streaming services.

Even though Carrie was the first published novel by Stephen King, it was not his first written book. Stephen King wrote The Long Walk during university in the mid-1960s before turning 20. Published in 1979 as part of The Bachman Books collection under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, the book appeared over a decade after its creation. Brian De Palma released his memorable adaptation of Carrie a few years prior.

While discussions about a film adaptation lasted for years, production happened in 2025. Lionsgate released The Long Walk on a $20 million budget. Francis Lawrence directed the movie, bringing experience from dystopian and post-apocalyptic book adaptations including four Hunger Games films and I Am Legend. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson played main characters Ray Garraty and Peter McVries. The actors capture the deep connection between the boys and engage audiences throughout the 108-minute runtime.

The story operates as a battle royale where participants walk continuously. Anyone dropping below the minimum walking speed within a designated time window gets shot on sight and loses. The final survivor receives one wish. Viewers quickly bond with the participants, cheering for them and mourning their losses.

It holds an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also ranked as the most-watched movie on HBO in Central Europe, hitting number one in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and the Netherlands.
