State of Decay 3 Details: Massive World and Overhauled Co-op

New details for State of Decay 3 reveal a map four times the size of the previous game. The title features seamless four-player cooperative play without distance restrictions and management of three settlements housing up to 36 residents.

Creator Brian Menard showcased alpha gameplay in a recent video, focusing on cooperative mechanics.

Undead Labs removed the tethering system that previously kept players close together. Explorers can now travel anywhere on the map. This game world is roughly four times larger than the largest location in State of Decay 2.

The cooperative mode supports drop-in and drop-out functionality. Up to four users share a persistent world, including bases and survivors. Progress saves automatically even during asynchronous play.

Players manage three settlements simultaneously. The resident limit rises to 36 people—with 12 assigned to each base. Core systems like building, crafting, resource management, and survival remain central to the experience.

Development focuses on exploration, looting, and player choice. The expanded community management system introduces new roles, skills, and specializations. Users can experience the game alone or in a group.

State of Decay 3 arrives in 2027 on Xbox, PS5, and PC.
