Square Enix has quietly launched a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version of their acclaimed sci-fi RPG, Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Originally debuting on consoles and PC in 2023, this enhanced port brings a noticeable visual and technical uplift to the hybrid platform. Players can now enjoy the title at a crisp 1080p resolution in both docked and portable modes, bolstered by a smooth 60 FPS frame rate—a significant upgrade over the original Switch iteration’s 30 FPS cap and lower resolution target.
However, this release arrives with the same controversial limitations seen in Square Enix’s recent Octopath Traveler Switch 2 ports. The new version carries a $49.99 price tag, offers no discounted upgrade path for existing owners, and—perhaps most frustratingly—does not support save data transfers. This aggressive monetization strategy stands in stark contrast to more consumer-friendly policies adopted by industry peers, including Nintendo themselves, who have often provided seamless transitions for their own titles. While Square Enix may be banking on high sales figures to justify this approach, it remains a point of contention for many loyal fans.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R reimagines the 1999 PlayStation classic, following Federation officer Claude C. Kenny. After being unexpectedly displaced onto an unfamiliar, mystical world, Claude embarks on a journey to find his way home. Along the way, he joins forces with a local heroine, eventually becoming entangled in an epic narrative revolving around ancient prophecies and planetary salvation.
The title is currently available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, and both iterations of the Nintendo Switch.
