Star Citizen Fans Doubt Squadron 42’s Future After CitizenCon 2025

CitizenCon 2025 has wrapped up, but the debate surrounding it continues. At the event, Cloud Imperium Games revealed the alpha 4.4 update for Star Citizen, which will introduce the new Nyx star system.

This barren sector lies on the frontier of charted space. Initial screenshots of Nyx’s planets have already been released, and the update is slated to arrive next month.

During the presentation, Chris Roberts said the team resolved a number of technical issues and improved server stability.

Fans, however, noticed something else — there was no mention of Squadron 42. Developers had previously hinted at a 2026 release, but that now appears unlikely. All signs suggest the project, which features Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill and Gillian Anderson, may not launch until 2027.

The situation was further stirred by remarks from former CIG employee Robert Peterson, who left the studio in 2022. He claimed the company “burned millions of dollars on pointless things” over the years. He added that Squadron 42’s gameplay amounts to a “walking simulator with endless dialogue and drawn-out cutscenes,” calling the project “an interactive movie doomed to fail.”
