Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy IX Fans — Magic: The Gathering Cards Revealed

Rumors of a Final Fantasy IX remake have circulated for years, yet Square Enix has still made no official announcement.

Fans remain patient. After the releases of Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remastered, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, and the HD collections for Final Fantasy X and XII, it is the ninth entry — alongside the so-called “thirteenth” — that still lacks a modern update. The community has been urging Square Enix to address the title, but the company has stayed quiet.

Meanwhile, an unexpected development occurred. Square Enix announced a collaboration with Magic: The Gathering, resulting in collectible cards inspired by the Final Fantasy series — beginning with the seventh installment. Wizards of the Coast clarified that cards connected to Final Fantasy IX will be revealed separately by Square Enix as part of a series of surprises.

Fans took that post as a hint toward a remake and began debating it widely on social media: “Our third Scene Box transports us to FF9 and the Siege of Alexandria. If you’re looking for cards, Square Enix will show them to you.”

But rather than the eagerly anticipated game announcement, the company unveiled a card set. Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY is scheduled for release on December 5, 2025. The product will include six Final Fantasy IX cards as part of the “Scene Box” lineup.
