Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” receives its first reviews

Aaron Sorkin’s latest directorial effort, The Social Reckoning, has been met with a polarized reception from critics. Early reviews have currently yielded a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 46 on Metacritic.

The primary criticism centers on the perception that Sorkin is attempting to retroactively reshape historical narratives through a contemporary lens. Reviewers have labeled his critique of Big Tech and social media as dated, noting that his framing of a journalistic investigation as a world-altering event feels overly didactic. The film has also faced scrutiny regarding its visual presentation, with several critics describing the direction as lackluster and the performances as inconsistent; specifically, Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg has failed to resonate with many observers.

Despite these shortcomings, Sorkin’s signature style remains evident. Even those critical of the narrative arc have praised the film’s sharp, rhythmic dialogue and rapid-fire exchanges. The cast has earned general acclaim, with Mikey Madison receiving particular praise, while the musical score has been noted for its effectiveness in sustaining the film’s underlying tension.

The Social Reckoning is scheduled for international release on October 9.
