Sony to launch its own digital currency and introduce a new payment option in the PlayStation Store
Sony is preparing major changes to its services: in fiscal year 2026 the company plans to introduce a US dollar–pegged stablecoin. The new currency will enable gamers and anime fans to pay for purchases on the PlayStation Store and Crunchyroll.
Issuance will be overseen by Bastion, a U.S.-based firm chosen as the project’s exclusive partner. Bastion will be responsible for managing the reserves, issuance, and custody of the digital currency.
This initiative could reduce Sony’s payment processing costs—which currently range around 1.5–3.5% per transaction—streamline international settlements, and speed up cash flows. The company is expanding its infrastructure through an in-house banking division and has applied for a U.S. trust bank license for its subsidiary, Connectia Trust, to enable lawful issuance of the stablecoin.
Sony already maintains its own blockchain, Soneium, so launching a stablecoin could represent the first step in a broader strategy across its gaming and digital offerings.
