Tuesday’s PlayStation State of Play served as a massive showcase for upcoming titles, featuring exciting reveals like God of War Laufey and fresh updates on highly anticipated games. Among the highlights, Marvel’s Wolverine took center stage with our most comprehensive look at its visceral gameplay yet, ahead of its September 15 release.
Beyond the characters we were introduced to in last September’s initial teaser, the latest footage unveiled several key faces joining the roster. Let’s break down everyone confirmed for Marvel’s Wolverine so far, starting with the legendary brawler himself.
1
Wolverine
Unsurprisingly, Logan—also known as James Howlett—is at the heart of the experience. While he has made numerous cameos in gaming history, Marvel’s Wolverine marks his first true starring role since the 2009 cult-classic tie-in, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The latest trailer suggests a pre-established history between Logan and the X-Men, placing this version of the character in a more integrated role compared to the loner persona famously portrayed by Hugh Jackman. Fans will be pleased to see classic looks, including his iconic yellow suit and the “Patch” persona—the suave, eyepatch-wearing alter ego he adopts during his operations in Madripoor.
Questions remain regarding other potential iterations of the hero. Given Insomniac’s track record of blending multiple protagonists, some wonder if Laura Kinney (X-23) or Logan’s son, Daken, might emerge. While there is no official confirmation, the precedent set by their Spider-Man series suggests we shouldn’t rule out a surprise appearance.
2
Jean Grey

The most significant revelation from the recent trailer is the inclusion of Jean Grey. As a founding X-Man with a deep, complex history alongside Wolverine, her presence adds a layer of emotional weight to the story. Their chemistry in the footage is palpable, hinting at a relationship that honors their long-standing comic book connection.
Gameplay-wise, we see Jean providing tactical support, utilizing her telekinesis to immobilize enemies for Logan to dispatch. Despite the potential for switching perspectives, game director Mike Daly confirmed in an interview with IGN that the narrative remains laser-focused: “This game is all about Wolverine and you play Wolverine the whole way through.”
3
Mystique

The elusive shapeshifter Mystique makes brief appearances in both trailers, leaving her role ambiguous. Whether she acts as an antagonist or an unpredictable ally remains to be seen. Given that the plot centers on the pursuit of kidnapped mutants, it is entirely possible that Mystique is operating under her own agenda.
4
Sabretooth

Sabretooth is usually defined by his rivalry with Logan, but Insomniac is shaking things up. According to Daly, the two are actually fighting on the same side in this story. The dynamic is portrayed through playful combat banter, with the two often competing to secure the final takedown—a refreshing twist on their traditionally hostile relationship.
5
Omega Red
The lethal Omega Red is clearly identified as a primary threat. Known for his carbonadium tentacles and ruthless history as a KGB operative, he appears as a formidable adversary, actively engaging Wolverine in the trailers. Rumors persist about his allegiance to The Hand, which could signal a larger shadow organization pulling the strings.
6
Bolivar Trask
While the character himself has yet to appear, the presence of his company, Trask Industries, is everywhere. Enemies throughout the trailer are seen wearing gear branded with the “Trask” logo, indicating he is the architect behind the anti-mutant efforts. As the creator of the Sentinels, his fingerprints are all over the game’s central conflict.
7
Sentinels
The iconic, towering mutant-hunting machines return with a vengeance. These Sentinels are depicted as massive, city-threatening threats, though the gameplay footage also reveals smaller, infantry-sized units, implying players will need to handle threats on both a macro and micro level.
8
The Reavers
These cybernetically enhanced mercenaries serve as the primary fodder for Wolverine’s rage. Hired by Trask to locate and capture mutants, their technological modifications make them perfect subjects for Logan’s signature combat style. While their leader, Donald Pierce, is heavily implied, his presence remains unconfirmed.
9
Leech
Among those being rescued is Leech, an outcast mutant known for his ability to suppress the powers of others. His appearance, typically associated with the Morlocks who reside in the sewers, highlights the depth of the mutant world Insomniac is building. His inclusion suggests the narrative will touch on the plight of “non-human-passing” mutants.
10
The Red-Clad Ninja
Initial confusion led some to speculate about a Deadpool cameo, but the figure in red appears to be a highly trained ninja, likely an operative of The Hand. While these fighters are more commonly known as Daredevil’s foes, their history with Wolverine makes them a perfect fit for a high-intensity action encounter.
