God of War TV Series Makes Yet Another Shocking Recasting Decision

Prime Video’s ambitious God of War television adaptation is facing additional casting shakeups ahead of its second season, with insider reports indicating that producers are actively searching for older actors to step into the roles of Atreus and Thrud.

Initially, the production lined up an impressive ensemble for its inaugural run, featuring Ryan Hurst of Sons of Anarchy fame as Kratos, alongside Callum Vinson (Chucky) cast as Atreus and Island Austin (Insidious: Out of the Further) as Thrud. However, following news that Ryan Hurst suffered a filming-related injury requiring a complete recasting of the lead role, a recent report from MP1st reveals that both Atreus and Thrud will also be recast for the sophomore season.

According to casting calls surfacing from May that mirror earlier character descriptions, Prime Video has shifted its target demographic. The studio is now seeking performers aged 14 to 17, moving away from the younger 9-to-12 age bracket.

While the debut season is set to adapt the narrative of the 2008 game, the subsequent season will transition into the events of 2022’s acclaimed God of War: Ragnarok. Because the source material incorporates a notable narrative time jump—during which both Atreus and Thrud assume significantly more demanding, combat-heavy responsibilities—the creative team evidently prefers utilizing more mature actors rather than waiting for their original youthful cast members to naturally mature.

Coupled with Ryan Hurst’s unfortunate departure, these sweeping alterations inevitably generate anxiety regarding the series’ overall tonal consistency and whether ongoing production hurdles will compromise the final product. Although it remains impossible to judge the quality without official footage, many fans will undoubtedly miss the chance to watch Callum Vinson organically grow into the character—a trajectory successfully achieved by Bella Ramsey as Ellie in The Last of Us.

At present, no further high-profile replacements are anticipated for either of the initial two seasons. A definitive premiere date for the series opener is still unconfirmed as production prepares to resume with a newly appointed Kratos. Meanwhile, the franchise’s next gaming installment, God of War Laufey, is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
