Shovel Knight creators say their indie studio’s future depends on Mina the Hollower
Yacht Club Games hopes the project will move about 500,000 units.
The Shovel Knight team at Yacht Club Games told Bloomberg that their next title, Mina the Hollower, could determine the studio’s future.
The studio says selling roughly 500,000 copies would put them on solid ground. Around 200,000 would be an acceptable result. But if sales don’t exceed 100,000, it could become a serious problem, co‑founder Sean Velasco warns.
Last month the release of Mina the Hollower was pushed back indefinitely. As Jason Schreier reported, the game remained in a very raw state until recently: only in the past few weeks were developers finally able to play through all of the content from start to finish. In doing so, they found many defects that still need to be addressed.
The studio has already gone through layoffs and now employs just 15 people. Schreier describes Yacht Club Games’ finances as “dire”. Maintaining their independence hinges directly on Mina the Hollower’s commercial performance.
