Seven Takeaways From Head Trip 2026
With apologies to attendees inconvenienced when the first day of Head Trip ended early due to potential lightning, the general consensus on the ground during day two was largely the same: “It’s pretty epic that it’s turning out this way, though.”
The situation unfolded when music was abruptly cut off at exactly 9 p.m. on Saturday night while Chris Lake and Fisher performed as Under Construction on Head Trip’s sole stage. “That was probably the best show I’ve ever played,” Lake later tweeted. “Right before the music cut, Fish had said similar. We unfortunately didn’t get any warning and didn’t get any chance to explain to you what was happening (we didn’t know either) and we got rushed off site.”
As artists were rushed away, the roughly 90,000 attendees on the field were instructed to walk back to their vehicles due to approaching weather from remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel moving inland toward the Southern California coast. Rain arrived within 30 minutes, and the remainder of night one was cancelled completely, scrapping a headlining set by Calvin Harris.
Head Trip took place Oct. 10–11 on the Coachella grounds in Indio, California. The dejected ambience transformed into heightened anticipation the following morning when festival organizer Goldenvoice announced that Harris had joined the Sunday night lineup.
“In an unthinkable situation, every artist made sacrifices for the greater good of the show, resulting in a truly once in a lifetime day of music,” Goldenvoice senior vice president of talent Danny Bell tells Billboard. “It perfectly exemplifies what makes this genre of music and the artists that drive the culture forward so special.”
Camaraderie also led Peggy Gou to step in on day two when The Blessed Madonna became unable to perform for unannounced reasons. The revised Sunday bill featured DJ Harvey, Gou—who had also performed back-to-back with Four Tet the previous night—Dom Dolla back-to-back with Kettama, Skrillex, Harris, and Swedish House Mafia. The city of Indio confirmed to Billboard that it will not fine Goldenvoice for Swedish House Mafia running 33 minutes past the sound curfew.
Skrillex, Harris, and Swedish House Mafia are three architects of the EDM era and the US dance music boom. Alongside Avicii, David Guetta, Zedd, and Martin Garrix, they altered the trajectory of American dance music and opened doors for millions of fans who entered the scene in the early and mid-2010s.
Head Trip marked the first time all three artists performed at the same festival on the same day on the same stage, back-to-back-to-back. The 18+ festival drew a balanced crowd of younger attendees and veterans of the era, creating a dual energy of nostalgia and discovery.
These are seven takeaways from the festival.
-
The Stage & Sound Were Dazzling
Following the format of Desert Trip and Power Trip, Head Trip utilized a single stage. L-Acoustics provided sound for the 90,000-person crowd, while French production designer Romain Pissenem and his company High Scream designed the stage. High Scream has previously worked on the closing ceremonies of the French Olympics, UEFA Euro 2020, and shows for numerous DJs. The festival positioned the mainstage at the far end of the field near Coachella’s Outdoor Stage location, accompanied by multiple smaller screens in a circle around the crowd.
Pissenem told Billboard that his goal is to create spaces where general admission ticket holders share an experience equal to VIP attendees. The sci-fi-inspired stage design fostered a communal atmosphere from front to back, with attendees dancing on the concrete steps and walls of Coachella’s typical VIP viewing area.
-
Calvin Harris Is Arguably the Greatest Songwriter in Modern Dance Music
Harris opened his rescheduled set with 2012’s “Sweet Nothing” before playing selections from his catalog alongside tracks by Eric Prydz, Fred again.., The Chemical Brothers, and Robert Miles.
His 2014 collaboration with singer John Newman, “Blame,” holds more than 1.4 billion streams on Spotify and generated a massive singalong on Sunday. When Harris asked “Do you know this one?” before playing “We Found Love,” the crowd responded with a frenzied yes.
Harris achieved this setlist without playing “One Kiss,” “Spectrum (Say My Name),” “Summer,” “Acceptable in the 80s,” “Girls,” or “Feels.”
-
It Wasn’t Just a Nostalgia Fest
Head Trip highlighted pioneers alongside current dance artists. Dom Dolla and Kettama delivered a set featuring a frantic edit of Wildchild’s 1995 club hit “Renegade Master” paired with a light show that reached the nearby Santa Rosa Mountains.
Peggy Gou partnered with Four Tet for a Saturday night back-to-back set and returned for a solo Sunday performance. Both sets featured her 2013 hit “It Goes Like (Na Na Na).” Chris Lake and Fisher delivered hits including Fisher’s “Losing It” and Lake’s “La Noche” with Skrillex and Anita B Queen.
DJ Harvey opened Sunday’s show with Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” played deadmau5 and Kaskade’s “I Remember,” and drank Jameson from the bottle. Between sets, venue music included Spiller and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love),” Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat,” and Chic’s “I Want Your Love.”
-
We Still Really Miss Avicii
Avicii died by suicide eight years ago, but maintained a presence at the festival. Near the end of his set, Skrillex played his dubstep edit of “Levels,” a remix he has performed for 15 years. Harris closed his set with the song to honor Avicii’s place in dance music history. The crowd reacted enthusiastically to the track as one of the era’s defining songs.
-
These Songs Are New Classics
Fifteen years ago, EDM faced criticism for being viewed as overly commercial, despite Skrillex earning three Grammys by 2012 and Harris accumulating 20 Hot 100 hits, including one No. 1, by 2018.
The festival brought together scene veterans, hipsters, and younger fans on dancefloors. These tracks are now recognized as genuine classics. Attendees headbanged when Skrillex played “Bangarang,” sang along when Harris dropped “We Found Love,” and sprinted toward the stage when Swedish House Mafia opened with “Miami 2 Ibiza.”
-
Sunflower Sound System Was Extremely Cool
Head Trip 2026 featured a tent named Sunflower Sound System curated by British musician Floating Points. The space hosted sets by Theo Parrish, Large Professor, Avalon Emerson, Ben UFO, and Floating Points as an intimate club alternative to the outdoor stage.
With unpublished set times, the tent featured a custom-built sound system designed by Floating Points and collaborators to ensure consistent audio quality.
Similar to Soulwax and James Murphy’s Despacio, the Sunflower Sound System provided a hi-fi listening environment that drew attendees into queues of up to 45 minutes.
-
The Scope of Head Trip Eclipsed Even the EDM Era
Dance music has historically operated outside traditional touring and streaming frameworks, frequently existing in clubs, fields, warehouses, and racetracks while remaining largely absent from the Grammy telecast. While some industry figures argue dance music functions too uniquely for mainstream integration, others seek parity with pop, hip-hop, country, and Latin music.
Head Trip followed Goldenvoice’s 2016 Desert Trip, which featured classic rock acts, and 2023’s Power Trip, which celebrated classic metal. Head Trip highlighted dance music’s selling power with an estimated crowd of 90,000, alongside data from a Luminate mid-year report identifying dance as a fast-growing genre.
Goldenvoice signaled the genre’s commercial scale by investing in a festival of this magnitude, which Apple Music livestreamed globally as its first video livestream of this scale.
Head Trip served as a celebration of dance music’s cultural standing.
