Selena Gomez Appears to Respond to Hailey Bieber’s Comments About Competing Beauty Brands

Selena Gomez appears to have answered remarks made by Hailey Bieber about beauty brands, posting a message on social media that many interpreted as a response.

The 33-year-old Only Murders in the Building star shared an Instagram Story that was later removed; observers read it as a reaction to Bieber, 28, after Bieber’s Rhode line began appearing at Sephora alongside Gomez’s Rare Beauty.

“Just leave the girl alone,” Gomez wrote in the since-deleted Instagram Story on Friday, Oct. 17. “She can say whatever she wants. Doesn’t affect my life whatsoever. It’s just about relevance not intelligence.” (TMZ report)

Gomez — who recently married producer Benny Blanco — also urged followers to respond with kindness rather than hostility.

“All brands inspire me,” she added. “There is room for everyone. And hopefully we can all stop.”

The post followed Bieber’s feature in WSJ Magazine, where the model discussed Rhode’s expansion and insisted she doesn’t set out to compete with other labels on shelves. (WSJ Magazine)

Bieber said she finds it frustrating to be cast in rivalries she didn’t create: “It’s always annoying being pitted against other people. I didn’t ask for that. When people want to see you a certain way and they’ve made up a story about you in their minds, it’s not up to you to change that.” She added, “I think there is space for everybody. I don’t feel competitive with people that I’m not inspired by.”

Rumors of tension between Gomez and Bieber have circulated for years, but both have publicly denied animosity. In March 2023, Gomez defended Bieber after learning the model had been targeted with threats and online harassment.

At the time, Gomez wrote on Instagram that Bieber had told her she was receiving death threats and hateful messages, and Gomez urged an end to the hostility: “This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying… I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”
