Scarlett Johansson to Lead New ‘The Exorcist’

The Avengers star and two-time Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson is set to play the lead in an upcoming reboot of the horror classic The Exorcist, according to Deadline.

Mike Flanagan — serving as both writer and director and known for projects such as Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House — is attached to the new adaptation. The film had been scheduled for release in March 2026, but Universal has postponed its premiere indefinitely.

Plot details are being kept confidential. William Friedkin’s original The Exorcist was released in 1973 and was adapted from the novel by William Peter Blatty. In autumn 2023 a sequel titled The Exorcist: Believer arrived; it was panned by critics and earned $137 million worldwide.

Johansson most recently appeared in the blockbuster Jurassic World: Rebirth and also debuted as a director with The Great Eleanor. Among her upcoming projects is a live-action remake of Disney’s animated film Tangled (2010).
