Hours before Britney Spears is set to directly address the Los Angeles court in a rare move during her conservatorship hearing, her boyfriend, Sam Asghari, is proudly rooting for her on the sidelines.
On his Instagram Story Wednesday (June 23), the personal trainer showed off what looks to be a homemade T-shirt that reads “Free Britney” in pink and purple lettering. He also included a lion emoji to symbolize his “lioness,” which is the term of endearment he uses to affectionately address Spears.
Asghari previously made his support for Spears and disdain for her father Jamie Spears explicit in February, just days after The New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears premiered. “Now it’s important for people to understand that I have zero respect for someone trying to control our relationship and constantly throwing obstacles our way. In my opinion Jamie is a total d—,” Asghari wrote on his Story. “I won’t be going into details because I’ve always respected our privacy but at the same time I didn’t come to this country to not be able to to express my opinion and freedom.”
The 39-year-old pop superstar will be heard in open court for the first time during the conservatorship that has controlled her life and career for the last 13 years. She’s spoken in court before, but the courtroom was always cleared and transcripts sealed. Regardless of her appearance being remote due to COVID, Spears knows fans will be supporting her after she subtly addressed the #FreeBritney movement — which received an enormous amount of support following the release of Framing Britney Spears — in a Sept. 3 court filing when she adamantly argued for transparency in her case after filing an unprecedented objection to a motion from her father to seal a filing in the care.
“The world is watching,” read the filing.
Confidential court records obtained by The New York Times on Tuesday revealed how Spears has quietly been advocating for the end of the court conservatorship, which “restricted everything from whom she dated to the color of her kitchen cabinets,” the records indicate, and her father’s central role in it.
