Ryan Gosling Officially Cast as Marvel’s New Ghost Rider

Ryan Gosling has finally secured his dream role. During a blockbuster presentation on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige officially announced that the supernatural fan-favorite Ghost Rider is blazing a trail into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by none other than Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049, Project Hail Mary).

Gosling’s aspirations to play the fiery vigilante date back to 2022, and earlier this year, the actor hinted that preliminary conversations with Marvel Studios were underway. Upon discovering Gosling’s genuine enthusiasm for the character, Feige publicly remarked that he was eager to integrate the acclaimed actor into the sprawling MCU ensemble.

That vision has now materialized. Shawn Levy—the visionary filmmaker behind Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, which also stars Gosling—is officially attached to direct the standalone feature slated for a 2028 theatrical release.

The iconic antihero previously headlined a pair of live-action adaptations distributed by Columbia Pictures—2007’s Ghost Rider and 2012’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance—both starring Nicolas Cage as stuntman Johnny Blaze. Although the cinematic rights reverted to Marvel in 2013, the studio initially chose to explore the mythos on television rather than the silver screen, introducing the Robbie Reyes iteration (played by Gabriel Luna) in ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Ghost Rider first roared onto the comic book scene in 1972 within the pages of Marvel Spotlight #5. Conceived by then-editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, writer Gary Friedrich, and artist Mike Ploog, the character centers on daredevil Johnny Blaze, who strikes a Faustian bargain with the Marvel universe’s devil, Mephisto, to rescue his surrogate father.

While the character’s publication history has grown wonderfully complex over the past 54 years, Ghost Rider’s striking, hellfire-infused aesthetic has guaranteed him a lasting legacy among comic enthusiasts. Now, audiences will finally witness how this legendary spirit of vengeance translates to a premier MCU blockbuster.
