Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Revival: Why I’m Ready to Believe

Ryan Coogler is officially prioritizing his highly anticipated revival of The X-Files, confirming that the project will take precedence over his next Black Panther installment. During a recent guest appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the acclaimed director shared his profound enthusiasm for the franchise and offered a glimpse into his creative vision for the reboot.

For Coogler, the drive to revisit the series is rooted in a deep sense of nostalgia. “That show is what I used to watch with my mom,” he told Horowitz, describing it as “one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made.” Coogler draws inspiration from original creator Chris Carter’s own influences, noting that while Carter sought to capture the essence of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Coogler aims to honor the legacy of The X-Files by transforming those classic elements into something entirely fresh and contemporary.

The director expressed a particular affinity for the series’ core dynamic: the friction between a skeptic and a believer. He likened this compelling chemistry to the atmosphere of True Detective season 1. Furthermore, Coogler acknowledged the monumental impact the show had on the industry, specifically highlighting how it launched the career of Vince Gilligan. Without the foundation laid by Mulder and Scully, iconic series like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul might never have materialized.

Regarding the structure of the new series, Coogler intends to maintain the classic balance that fans adore. “We intend on having both ‘monsters of the week’ and also the overarching conspiracy,” he revealed. Seeking to master the nuances of the medium, Coogler even sought “advice about how to make television” directly from Gilligan, ensuring the reboot benefits from the wisdom of the original show’s most successful alum.

While a definitive timeline and platform remain under wraps, Coogler emphasized that this is his current focus. “It’s what I’m doing now,” he stated, adding that Black Panther will follow. He acknowledged the weight of expectations, noting the “pressure of the fans” and his desire to deliver a product that honors the intelligence of the audience. When pressed on whether original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny would return, Coogler remained characteristically enigmatic, stating only that he is a “big fan” of both actors.

Originally airing on Fox from 1993 to 2002, The X-Files spanned nine seasons and 202 episodes before returning for two short-run seasons in 2016 and 2018. The franchise also produced two standalone feature films in 1998 and 2008.
