Neil Druckmann’s departure appears to have been a definitive turning point for the creative strategy behind HBO’s post-apocalyptic hit ‘The Last of Us.’ It is increasingly likely that the show’s third season, which is currently in active production, will serve as the series finale.
In a recent interview, HBO CEO Casey Bloys indirectly fueled these rumors, stating:
“It certainly looks that way [that the third season will be the end]. However, we generally prefer to defer to the showrunners’ vision in these instances. I would ultimately direct that question to them.”
As a reminder, Druckmann stepped back from his primary role in the series to focus on Naughty Dog’s upcoming video game slate, including ‘Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.’ Despite this shift, he has confirmed that he will remain attached to the production as an executive producer.
The upcoming third season is expected to place a significant focus on Abby, the pivotal figure responsible for the tragic fate of Joel.
