Rumor: PS6 Risks Launching at Over $1,000 Due to Memory Costs

The next generation of PlayStation consoles faces a difficult outlook. Memory and storage prices could double by late 2027, potentially driving up hardware costs.

Microsoft highlighted these trends while explaining price hikes for the Xbox Series X and S. The company reported that console memory costs have already risen 2.5 times and expects another doubling by autumn 2027.

Rising component costs affect other manufacturers as well. Apple increased prices for several MacBook and iPad models, while Valve released a Steam machine starting at roughly $1000 without a controller.

These trends threaten the PlayStation 6. Rumors suggested Sony planned a budget-friendly launch for late 2027, but escalating memory costs could render that strategy impossible.

Sony might try to balance these expenses by pushing software and PlayStation Plus subscriptions. The company could also limit PlayStation 5 shipments during the holiday season to maintain profit margins.

The console market remains unstable. If the barrier to entry for the next generation reaches $1000, consumer demand may drop significantly.
