Route 66 Rework — A Guided Tour of Arizona and New Mexico

Work on the Route 66 Rework for American Truck Simulator is progressing steadily. Today we’re sharing a wider look at the towns and cities that give this storied highway its unmistakable personality.

Route 66 Revitalization: Cities Along the Route

Although many of these communities have appeared in ATS before, the rework allowed us to rebuild each location from the ground up. We’ve improved accuracy while retaining the layouts and charm players remember. Winslow is a new inclusion in this update and joins a fully refreshed roster of towns that now feel more authentic and lived-in.

The Arizona segment proved especially rewarding. Iconic stops like Kingman and Flagstaff — along with the newly added Winslow — received meticulous attention. We studied how these towns align with the highway in real life: the road geometry, commercial clusters, and how the terrain shapes the driving experience. Those observations guided updates to their in-game footprints so the journey feels truer to life.

From Flagstaff’s pine-lined highlands and cooler elevations to the arid expanses around Holbrook and Kingman, the region has been revitalized with refined terrain, updated assets, and richer roadside detail. These changes enhance the sense of place and make transitions between towns feel more natural, creating a smoother, more immersive route across Arizona.

Across the state line into New Mexico, the rework continues with refreshed versions of Gallup, Albuquerque, and Tucumcari. While these towns were already cherished parts of ATS, their updated incarnations better capture each community’s architectural character, atmosphere, and road network.

We reevaluated principal junctions, corrected road alignments, upgraded signage, and modernized layouts while preserving the spirit of the original map. The result: towns that feel more textured and convincing, particularly along the main Route 66 corridor where classic motels, neon signage, and sweeping desert views define the experience.

This phase of the Route 66 Rework honors the legacy of the original ATS map while bringing its realism up to modern standards. The Mother Road is more than pavement—it’s a thread of shared history that links dozens of communities, each with distinct character. By refreshing existing towns, introducing new stops, and improving their interconnections, we aim to deliver a richer, more cohesive journey along one of America’s most iconic routes.
