Rockstar Games and Take-Two Halt Video Game Sales in Brazil
Effective March 16, Rockstar Games has suspended the direct sale of its titles in Brazil through the proprietary Rockstar Games Launcher and official web store. While full game acquisitions are now restricted, players can still purchase in-game currencies, such as Shark Cards for GTA Online and Gold Bars for Red Dead Online. Users who already possess games within their RGL library will retain full, uninterrupted access to their existing collection.
The catalyst for this sudden departure is the introduction of the Brazilian Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (Digital ECA), a new regulatory framework focusing on online safety for minors. Despite the halt on their first-party storefront, Rockstar’s catalog remains widely available through alternative digital marketplaces, including Steam, the Epic Games Store, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store.
Industry observers suggest that Rockstar likely deemed the cost of navigating these new legal complexities higher than the potential revenue from the region’s direct sales. Consequently, the developer opted to withdraw its products from its own platform rather than overhaul its systems for compliance. The move was executed without an advance announcement, depriving local fans of a final opportunity to buy directly from the source—though, in practice, Rockstar’s own store was often considerably more expensive than competing third-party retailers.
