Rockstar Co‑Founder Calls Red Dead Redemption 2 the Studio’s Creative Pinnacle
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, said he regards Red Dead Redemption 2 as the studio’s crowning achievement. He also singled out GTA IV, GTA V and the original Red Dead Redemption as standout projects.
Although Rockstar is most commonly associated with the Grand Theft Auto series, its catalog includes other renowned franchises — Max Payne, Bully and L.A. Noire. According to Houser, however, Red Dead Redemption 2 represents the company’s zenith. Many fans agree, still citing the game as the standard-bearer for story-driven open-world experiences.
During an interview with IGN at LA Comic Con 2025, Houser spoke about several of the studio’s titles. He explained why a Bully sequel never came to fruition and singled out the importance of Red Dead Redemption 2:
“I think Red Dead 2 is the best thing I’ve ever made. It’s the most coherent realization of an open world, a consistent thematic arc and an emotional journey.”
Houser also praised GTA IV for its attempt to advance narrative storytelling, and acknowledged that the three-protagonist approach in GTA V was a successful experiment, even if it wasn’t without its issues.
