Rockstar and Take-Two: ‘Rock Stars’ Opened the Gates of Hell on Discord

In yesterday’s distribution to selected fan sites, Rockstar Games staff included a link to their Discord server, and in just a few seconds, thousands of users flocked in. At present, approximately 18 hours after opening, there are already 120,000 people.

Among the channels are groups for finding companions in GTA Online and Red Dead Online, as well as threads dedicated to GTA 6 and RDR 1. However, most interestingly, there is no moderation. This means there’s an unimaginable variety of messages: from questions about the second trailer (sometimes answered by AI-powered bots) to various obscenities, racism, and other “joys” of being on “Discord.”

The community has mixed reactions to this move by the developers. Some believe this is essentially the start of the advertising campaign for Grand Theft Auto VI (rather, a component of an intriguing marketing model), while others think the server is fake (allegedly, official representatives wouldn’t allow such chaos) or simply a random leak (in which case, R* would have likely shut it down by now). According to information found on the server, it was launched in mid-summer last year, and the company’s account was created in 2019.
