Report: New Far Cry Game to Replace Canceled Extraction Shooter

Vantage Studios—the talented development powerhouse behind major Ubisoft franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry—is reportedly pivoting toward a fresh open-world first-person shooter following the cancellation of a controversial extraction shooter spin-off.

According to an exclusive report by Insider Gaming, a project previously known by the codename Maverick has been officially shelved. However, its foundational assets and concepts are being repurposed for a brand-new open-world shooter currently carrying the codename Kodiak. This project is actively being developed alongside another mysterious Far Cry title codenamed Blackbird, which is widely anticipated to be the next major mainline installment in the 22-year-old franchise.

Insider Gaming notes that Far Cry Kodiak successfully transitioned past its conceptual phase earlier this month and is now fully underway at Vantage Studios.

Specific details surrounding Far Cry Kodiak remain scarce, though it is anticipated to inherit remnants of Maverick’s scrapped concepts. Given that an official release is likely still several years away, returning to the series’ roots as an action-adventure FPS offers a much safer approach to placating longtime fans than an experimental extraction shooter would have.

The series’ latest release, Far Cry 6, debuted in 2021 to a polarized reception from critics and players alike, and Ubisoft has kept quiet regarding future installments ever since. Notably, veteran Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay departed the company in 2021 shortly after Far Cry 6 hit shelves.

In the meantime, franchise enthusiasts can look forward to Hulu’s upcoming Far Cry television adaptation helmed by creator Noah Hawley. Following an anthology format, each season will transport audiences to distinct environments featuring entirely new casts of characters, mirroring the structure of the video games. The series boasts a stellar lineup starring co-creator Rob Mac alongside Steve Buscemi and Lizzy Caplan, and it will be available to stream domestically on Hulu and internationally via Disney Plus.
