Following the resounding success of 1000xResist, I have been eagerly awaiting the next endeavor from the visionary team at Sunset Visitor. Today, the indie studio finally unveiled their latest project: Prove You’re Human. This haunting, sci-fi narrative adventure blurs the lines between man and machine, tasking players with navigating a digital landscape through the unconventional medium of CAPTCHA-style tests. You can watch the reveal trailer below.
While the game’s core mechanics might sound abstract, they coalesce beautifully within the world Sunset Visitor has constructed. In a discussion with Remy Siu, he provided insight into the game’s premise. Players step into the shoes of a protagonist who opts for a Severance-esque procedure, digitizing their consciousness to interact with an entity named Mesa. Mesa is a sentient AI, and the central conflict hinges on a high-stakes identity struggle: your digital clone must convince Mesa that she is not human, despite Mesa’s absolute certainty that she is. To emphasize this duality, the game utilizes full-motion video (FMV) to distinguish the real-world vessel from the digital manifestation.
Exploration in Prove You’re Human is driven by a unique investigation system that repurposes the mundane CAPTCHA tests we encounter online to prove our humanity. For example, in one sequence, the player captures an image of a tree; upon identifying all tree-related segments, the object spontaneously ignites. These interactions delve into deeper psychological territory as well, featuring prompts that ask players to identify “you, before” or select snapshots of “you, after death.”
This project marks a collaboration with Black Tabby Games—the creative minds behind Slay the Princess—who are serving as the publisher. Beyond providing the necessary financial support, Black Tabby is actively involved in narrative and creative consulting. Notably, in light of the game’s focus on AI ethics, the development contract strictly prohibits the use of generative AI throughout the entire production lifecycle.
Though the trailer is brief, it captures an aesthetic and atmospheric tone that feels like a natural evolution of the studio’s previous work. While a specific release date has yet to be finalized, Prove You’re Human is currently slated for a PC launch, with potential for console ports in the future.
